History of Saint Winifred’s Catholic Church

Saint Winifred’s is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Salford and has a well-established place within the local Catholic community. The foundation stone of the present church was laid on 17 June 1950 by Bishop Henry Vincent Marshall. The church was then dedicated to St Winifred, blessed and opened on 12 August 1951, and the parish was canonically erected on 9 January 1952.

A new presbytery was built in January 1959 to link with the church, and the parish centre was added in 1982 as the Kavanagh Centre, named in honour of Fr Kavanagh. In 1986 the sanctuary was reordered.

Today, Saint Winifred’s remains an active parish church serving families in the Heaton Mersey and Heaton Moor area.
